SEBACEOUS CYST REMOVAL AT THE OXFORD SKIN CLINIC
Sebaceous cysts are common, irritating and can get infected. They grow slowly over a long period.
Cysts which repeatedly get infected are much more difficult to remove, so it is always best to have them removed early.
Most GP practices no longer remove cysts as they do not have the time or equipment.
Removal in the clinic is straightforward, using a small incision into the skin after numbing the skin.
The cyst envelope and contents are removed. Often the cyst is stuck to surrounding tissue, and you will feel a lot of tugging and pulling. However with correct anaesthesia you should feel no pain.
Several deep and skin stitches are usually put in to close the gap and ‘tie’ the skin down to deep tissues.
Stitches are removed in clinic 1 – 2 weeks after excision.
